PB2 is all the rage, and really it's so bad for you. I really don't get all of the posts I see about people that appear to be healthy adding it to their shakes every day.

PB2 is Not Whole Real Food. Right? If you are going to have a nut butter, wouldn't you want the real deal? They extract through a pretty bad process {I've read all about it and it made me shudder} almost all of the essential monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, and then it leaches the vitamin E content out which is fat soluble. Hmmm... see the problem with the nutritional content. And the fat you get in nuts is the good stuff that you want out of them. The company also add a mix of sugar and salt in to make it taste better {everything fatty tastes different without the fats}. With that added sugar, it's for sure NOT appropriate for a Paleo diet of any kind. And on top of that it's not organic. I don't really like peanuts because of the aflatoxins in them - so I really dislike this PB2 product for anyone that is looking for a cleaner way of eating.

What problems can arise from using products like this?

If you suffer from any sort of infertility, then you need your vitamins A, C and E. David Christopher recently talked about the number one reason we are seeing such a rice in  Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), and that is TOXINS!!

There was a huge story a few years ago that said:

"Alarming findings from a study on pregnant women and some potentially dangerous chemicals. A University of California, San Francisco study found that dozens of chemicals showed up in the blood and urine of expecting moms. Some of the chemicals like P-C-B's and ones used in flame retardants were banned before the women were even born. Out of the 163 chemicals studied, 43 of them were found in nearly all of the 268 pregnant women tested. The study is published in the journal of Environmental Health Perspectives. It's the first time researchers analyzed chemicals found in pregnant women."

Wow!! So no matter what your gender, what a great reason for a cleanse. No doubt. Wow. So stop adding the toxic load to your body with craptacular foods, and start using the real deal. Real organic foods = healthy happy life. :) End rant.

Baby Medication Causes Greater Risk Of Asthma Research in the UK says

The children that has even one dose anytime before their first birthday were 60% more at risk of asthma, the European Journal of Public Health found. How many of you have given your baby Tylenol before receiving any of the four times they are given a vaccine during their first year?


Why does this baby medication cause this asthmatic risk?

I believe, like many experts this is due to the depletion of your glutathione by acetaminophen. If you keep your glutathione levels up, the damage from the Tylenol may be largely preventable.

"Glutathione detoxifies acetaminophen, but once glutathione is depleted there can be significant cell death in the liver [THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF MEDICINE; Flanagan,RJ; 91(Suppl C):131S-139S (1991)].

I took my daughter off of dairy (except undenatured whey) several years ago, and her asthmatic issues really improved. In fact, our commercially short pasteurized high temp processed milk has 30% less whey protein than raw milk, and the regular pasteurized and homogenized has 87% less...  which reduces the glutathione boosting benefits. Eating dietary glutathione which plants are FULL off helps protect our lungs from oxidative assault. If you aren't eating properly and getting whole foods supplementation during breastfeeding, or even just giving your child formula without supplementation, you are missing out on this.

My daughter struggled to nurse (did you see my article on healthy nursing supplementation), and at that time I was drinking a lot of regular milk. It caused her a lot of tummy issues, and at the time there were so few non-dairy options that were not allergens for me... so we wanted to do goat's milk formula from the recipe we found online. Dr. Sears is amazing, However the doctor's eventually talked us into expensive formula... so that is what my baby got. They make you feel like you are a bad parent for choosing whole foods. That plus the lack of proper supplementation during pregnancy is what I believe played into her having severe asthma as an infant, that eventually required her to be on 6 puffs of inhaled steroids a day... until we got rid of the large amount of commercial dairy products she was drinking.

I went to a Robyn Openshaw event locally after we moved and she talked about her son's asthma and taking him off dairy. I went home and tossed it all. Hey, I had been dairy-free for years with no issues so why not her. She cried the first day because she couldn't have a yogurt squeezer, but that was it. Within five weeks we tossed our daily inhaler and she has never looked back.

Occasionally my daughter eats some raw goat's milk yogurt, she really loves Oatly and veggie milk, and on the go we use our vegan protein shake. Guess what, she has been fine with that. But I would have loved to have had all of that information all of those years ago when I was first pregnant. We recently discovered The Coconut Collaborative in our store, and the plain with the lemon ganache (coconut based) is like whipped cream with lemon curd on top. Just heavenly!! With items like that, Violife Feta and Parm, Daiya... there is no reason for not being dairy-free today.

Now back to glutathione, did you know that sulfur is required for the synthesis of glutathione? However I cannot eat the three pounds daily of sulfur-rich vegetables that Dr. Terry Wahls recommends because I have methylation issues and it will cause a major ammonia dump, which is very painful. I can do onions and I can do garlic. I can do cold-pressed juice and stir fry leafy greens. Did you know that collard greens are rich in isothiocyanates, which are powerful sulfur compound? Also did you know that in the Budwig cancer protocol it is the chemical reaction that take place between the sulfur protein in the cottage cheese and the oil from mixing of the oil and cottage cheese that is the foundation of the program?

I don't eat cottage cheese, and there is no one making raw goat cottage cheese in my area. Rice protein is high in the sulfur-containing amino acids, and I have started drinking amazake because of this mixed with flaxseed oil every night. A small study was done on patients with Liver Cirrhosis drinking amazake every night and it improved the Quality of Life (QOL) in all terms of sense of abdomen distension, edema, fatigue, muscle cramps, loss of appetite, taste disorder, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, and sleep disorder. They also found any sense of abdominal distension, constipation and vomiting had disappeared after 8 weeks of amazake intake and taste disorder and sleep disorder had disappeared after 12 weeks of amazake intake. No major clinical events or virological rebounds occurred in the subjects. I'm not worried about the koji in it, because although α-amylase from the mold (Aspergillus oryzae is described as an allergen), it is not suited to the diagnosis of fungal sensitization. This is expressed in Aspergillus oryzae and used in a purified form as a baking enzyme (raising agent). It can cause IgE-mediated sensitization in exposed bakers. Thus, detecting IgE to α-amylase can be used to diagnose sensitization, but not mold sensitization to baking enzyme. I don't eat gluten, or processed products using a baking enzyme anymore. There was a time when I lived on veggie sandwiches from Subway, long long ago. But that's a time far away from my current body, but something to keep in mind if you aren't there yet.

However the benefits seem to outweigh the risk to me. Another small study showed that the women that were consuming amazake, eliminated more of the toxins than those who did not. This was looking at mostly concentrations of PCDDs, PCDFs and PCBs. Amazake gives me more fiber, another source of whole food B vitamins, and minerals. I also take my vitamin C after to help all of my cellular functions as it does it natural work. Best of all, it seems to keep my blood sugar stable overnight as well which means I can sleep all night. We all need more undisturbed sleep. If you are on my Ketolicious program, you should be drinking this because rice koji reduced body weight gain, fat accumulation, and blood glucose level in high-fat diet-induced obese mice. Score!!

In Japan this amazake non-alcoholic version is often fed to weaning babies as a baby food due to the nutritional benefits. It contains pantothenic acid, B1, B2, B6, amino acids, biotin and inositol. Infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 mo of life, but maternal deficiency of some micronutrients, conveniently classified as Group I micronutrients during lactation, can result in low concentrations in breast milk and subsequent infant deficiency preventable by improving maternal status. I believe that when mom has a dense micronutrient support system it can make a huge difference during breastfeeding, and is not synthetic since they are still no where near testing babies for genetic mutations at birth. And then once baby is starting to wean and eat, using both supplementation mixed into their diet, and something like a whole food option of amazake can be something to consider. The B Vitamins have so much to do with our health, and it is no wonder as we become less nutritionally balanced, our kids are having far more wellness problems than we did. I think the fermented non-gmo soy drink that I have, and this koji fermented rice is what has started changing my wellness in so many ways.

You know that feeling when you are tired, cold and just don't care... I have been there. So many people don't realize that hypothyroidism isn't just about being cold all of the time. Many dealing with this are misdiagnosed with menopause for those flushing, sweating, heat intolerance, heart palpitations, and sleeplessness symptoms. This often mistaken illness really is effecting more women than we realize. In thyroid insufficiency, the reduced basal metabolic activity is what is causing that, so you need to support your metabolism. Also if you are still thinking about kids, it causes reduced folic absorption, so make sure you are getting enough folic via both nutrition and supplementation. All of this can lead to the reduced clearance of toxins by the liver, and so that is a big part of why people feel better in such a short time when using a plant based shake.

For this condition what is recommended is amino acids, fatty acids, co-enzymes and other raw materials needed to support the thyroid. I would personally also recommend you get some Ashwaganda into your diet. I like the Nature's Way supplement, and it can be had for under $10. Anyone taking Invigorate should also think about incorporating this because they have compounds that stimulate T3 and T4 synthesis. Our T3 and T4 functions it's pretty amazing.  Our thyroid hormones strongly influence the tight junctions in the stomach and small intestine - also known as our digestive brain. T3 and T4 have been shown to protect gut mucosal lining from stress induced ulcer formation. In another study, endoscopic examination of gastric ulcers found low T3, low T4 and abnormal levels of reverse T3.

What Does Leaky Gut Have To Do With Hypothyroidism?

And guess what... you don't get huge digestive issues or leaky gut issues until your glutathione stores are depleted. Why? The doctors at the San Jose Functional Medicine office say, "Glutathione is the main antioxidant that protects cellular mitochondria. Glutathione exists in reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) states. GSH (reduced glutathione) becomes GSSG (oxidized glutathione) by an enzyme called glutathione peroxidase. GSH can be regenerated from GSSG by the enzyme glutathione reductase. As long as these enzymes are working efficiently, your body is able to maintain this glutathione recycling system and you are fine."

So think about what's going on in your system if you a) have a failing T3 and T4 function, and b) your glutathione levels are depleted? It's clear that you really cannot have that healthy gut without a healthy thyroid, and you can’t have a healthy thyroid without a healthy gut. An unhealthy gut has been linked to diseases ranging from autism and depression to autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s, inflammatory bowel disease and type 1 diabetes.... and so you know what that is going to be doing to you. You also can boost your glutathione with support that can also help fortify the immune system to increase its ability to fight disease,

I also love what I have read about Irish Moss, being a plant based source of thyroid support. Nature is so nurturing. Try to boost your metabolic pathways with some natural supplementation, and a plant heavy diet, and perhaps add in the Ashwaganda to see if it helps. Hippocrates said: “All disease begins in the gut.” 2,500 years later we’re just beginning to understand how right he was. Really make some changes to your gut, along with the T3 and T4 I think will give you something you've been looking for.

In a perfect world we'd all be happy and live in harmony. In a perfect world my daughter would just get math, instead of having a brain that finds it to be a foreign language. In a perfect world going what you love would be all that you needed to do. In a perfect world you would eat mostly plants, very clean foods and get all of the nutrients you need from your food. But most of us do not have that ability. And many things we consume are not highly dense nutritionally, but we need to start learning how to fill in those gaps. 

I was always told that the secret to a diet like the Atkins diet was that it would balance out my blood sugar. So I wanted to know more about what my blood sugar was and why it needed balanced out.

The blood sugar concentration or blood glucose level is the amount of  glucose (sugar) present in the blood of a human or animal. The body naturally tightly regulates blood glucose levels as a part of metabolic system in your body. If you are not a diabetic, then generally speaking your blood sugar doesn't change much at all during the day. It may rise a little after a good carbohydrate packed meal, but your body does what it needs to {which could be part of the problem here} to balance everything back out.

Insulin is the problem for those that are diabetic, all three types, and it's actually a hormone that is made in the pancreas. It plays a big role in metabolism. Your other brain, the digestive tract breaks down these carbohydrates in your body and converts it to glucose, a form of sugar that enters the bloodstream. You body uses that for energy. Exercise opens your fats cells from the inside to let sugar out for energy. Our body uses insulin to open our fat cells from the outside to store insulin. If you have too much sugar in your blood, your body will borrow some of the fat from your HDL and attach sugar to it. This is where our triglycerides and LDL come from.

If you are insulin resistant your body produces the insulin, but doesn't use it effectively. Can you guess what that means? Insulin is required for carbohydrate, fat and proteins to be metabolized, and so if you are resistant then muscle, fat and liver cells do not respond they way they should to this hormone. Experts believe that our obesity epidemic, and especially the inability to get rid of that fat around the waist is being caused by this insulin resistance.

So how does this impact fat loss for a mom like me? 

Your body has two forms of energy however. It can pull energy from sugars, or fats. Did you know that? And did you know that your brain runs on glucose only because it's the fastest energy to grab? If there is no sugar available for your body, it will then turn to fat to start producing energy generally. Unless you eat a ton of protein, and it can then turn the protein into the glucose it needs. I prefer my body to use my fat... as often as possible. Don't you love that? I know I always enjoy reducing the fat cells in my body, because a tiny fat cell is a happier fat cell.

How Stuff Works shared: 
The first line of defense in maintaining energy is to break down carbohydrates, or glycogen, into simple glucose molecules -- this process is called glycogenolysis. Next, your body breaks down fats into glycerol and fatty acids in the process of lipolysis. The fatty acids can then be broken down directly to get energy, or can be used to make glucose through a multi-step process called gluconeogenesis. In gluconeogenesis, amino acids can also be used to make glucose.

There are a lot of ways that you can properly recover after a good workout, and the top one that we always talk about is putting back the nutrients that our body recovers to heal our muscles. That means for muscle recovery you need some solid, healthy proteins, good solid fats. We often get sucked into this entire sugar-feeding frenzy to help your  and fast acting carbs. But your body "BURNs" more quality calories all day, and what you may not realize is that there is a lot more that goes into muscle recovery than just simple carbohydrates. In fact you could be too focused on the carbohydrates and that could be causing you to hold on to too much fat stores.

First off your body doesn't have to feed off of sugar, and in the best case it should be feeding off of fat. You are always going to burning calories 24 hours a day. Even when you aren't exercising your body is burning calories. I hear stories all of the time about clients that have issues with their 'low blood sugar' that is what we've programmed our bodies to crave. But you have to remember that some of the calories you are burning during your workout are from fat, some from carbs and a few from protein.But, you do not need to eat sugars to burn sugars. Many of you know that sprinting helps burn off glycating blood sugar and will then encourage your body to store glycogen in the muscles. The not only encourages muscle grown but your muscles are where your body is burning fat, even when you aren't exercising. If you body has these stores it realizes it can let go of fat stores since the demand isn't there. Carbohydrate loading will result in an increase of glycogen stored in your muscles and liver.

Do you want that? 


So what do I use. Well post workout muscle recovery depends on the type of workout. First off if I did cardio (which is usually some sort of tabata or interval workout) then I will go right for my shake mixed with coconut water and some Himalayan salt. If I've done a good solid Beast style strength training workout then I will add  in about a 1/2 cup of frozen blueberries to the mix if I really feel I need it... but you really don't need that, what you need to regulate your system is some relaxation, which is what makes stretching after a workout so important and almost even more important that nutrition.

Emotional Healing with Muscle Movement 

Muscle recovery isn't just about what you are eating, it's about fully being aware of the release of emotion you get from the workout to begin with.

There is a muscle + emotion relationship in your body that makes it so important that you physically move!

One of my amazing coaches has this 'ah-ha' moment today and shared:

"I am starting to think that pent up emotions are stored in our muscles. Every time I hit that spot in the workout where I am really working it and sticking it out through the really hard part, I can feel the emotional release. Weird. I guess that is why they say exercise is a good stress reliever."

That's right!

Often times our emotions are not being expressed or released and they will migrate in our bodies. This blocked emotional energy will manifest itself in your physical body. Your organs have receptors in them just like your brain does. Emotions affect organs and organs are related to muscles. I listened to this amazing TED talk about how we truly have two brains, our digestive brain, and our thinking brain but they both work in very similar manners. If one organ is not balanced then the related muscles will show the signs of this.

So when you think you have gotten beyond an emotion, your mind may move on, but your muscles do not. They still need to work through it. This "emotional armoring,”  was first brought to light by the psychotherapist William Reich. If you do not want to continue to carry around that emotional baggage then you need to find a way to move, and that can be any movement that suits you. the rest will come.

Stretching after your workout does more than just lean out the muscles And when you are doing these long stretches with deep breathing to relax your muscle tissues and liver become depleted of glycogen. Now your muscles need fuel to keep operating and your pancreas will begin to secrete some glucose which will signal your fat cells to let go of excess fat so your body can use it for fuel, and relaxation will let your body release the emotions that it finally worked out in your workout to begin with. When you stretch it's like this welcome sense of opening up your space. It's like you have cleared out a cluttered room and opened the blinds to let the sunlight stream in. So all of this needs to be a part of your recovery because it all works together.

You have to wonder as you sip on your tea latte, is matcha paleo?

Can You Get Fit Without Great Nutrition??

I hear it all of the time, "I'm just going to change my diet." But I have to be the first to share that being skinny doesn't always equate to being healthy. Health is a well rounded creature, and the cravings you will continue to have are directly related to that inner health issue.

When I work with a client I have them record their meals, even if they only do it via photo. I need to know what they are eating. They think I just want to make them stop eating all of the things they love, and I admit that sometimes I will do that. But what it all really is about is getting to the core of what is going on functionally inside of that body of yours. We all have more going on than we think when it comes to how we are eating, and how that relates to our hormones. I think that for women that means Estrogen often enough, and so that is going be the first focus as I go into talking about this more in depth over the next month.

Hormones, Nutrition and Fitness

Hormones - we all have them, we joke about them and women hate them. They are an ever present part of our lives and yet we don't really as individuals know very much about them or how they relate to our overall health. When you exercise your body then has some increased energy needs.You need to be able to have the ability for the increase muscular, metabolic, respiratory and cardiovascular demands when you step up to the plate. When you finish you will still have needs for metabolic stimulation, repairing muscles, restoring cortisol levels. Without proper nutrition you body may see an increase in blood pressure, start eating away at the muscles instead of the fat, or even slow the metabolic rate. There are so many hormonal responses you could be having if you are not eating properly while trying to reach your fitness goals, and I want you to start thinking about this hormone connection.

For women there is more to it. Young women after they've had their cycle will be at the lowest level of estrogen in their month. Women closer to menopause may see a spike or bursts in their estrogen levels. Estrogen determines if those carbs you've had or the fats are going to be fuel your body during your HIIT or Turbo cardio session. There are over forty estrogen metabolites and they become good or bad estrogen. It is all depending on where you are at with your hormones really that will determine the type of fitness program you should be looking at, as well as the types of foods to use as part of your wellness lifestyle.

You can't just expect a one solution all of the time to suit your health. That means having a variety of good, healthy meals and snacks around to support your system. There is more to it that I'll go into tomorrow, but just know that working out will lower your estrogen, and for some of you low estrogen may be a problem.

What to eat for hormonal support

If you have a higher level of estrogen in your body then you need to eat your kale, your raw juices, apples, ginger, lemon. You want to boost your gluathione which is a requirement to break down the excess estrogen in your body. You also want prebiotics not just probiotics. Root vegetables are great to help your liver naturally process estrogen. The more estrogen you are dealing with, the more root vegetables you may want to include. Stay away from the bag, sluggish fats that you may want to pile on those because that will slow down your liver and slow down the body natural processes.

Lignans can interfere with the natural production of estrogen, and if your body can't handle the estrogen it's already dealing with, this can be a problem. This is why soy is so bad for those women with PCOS as well. Women with estrogen dominance should stay away from over indulging in nuts. Those that are high in phytoestrogens are sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachio. Also almonds are a little higher, too. Women with major PCOS issues may even want to steer clear of walnuts, hazelnuts and dare I say cashews. Sorry, ladies. If you are low in estrogen then Flax seed and other seeds and nuts should be added to your diet, but don't over do it. You can also add in some soaked legumes, pea protein and make sure if you are lower in estrogen you get plenty of fruits and vegetables, especially in your recovery shake after a hard workout. Vitamin C and complex B vitamins are essential in raising your estrogen levels back up after a workout and keeping headaches, daytime fatigue, dry skin and an inability to focus in on tasks at work.

For women going into menopause with those major bursts of estrogen foods like bok choy, swiss chard and then those soaked and sprouted quinoa and buckwheat items are actually great here. This is where you are going to get those good B vitamins and the fiber your body needs to flush the estrogen out of your body quickly and efficiently. And when you are dealing with those mood swings you need to make sure you are getting enough of those essential fatty acids. You can eat avocados, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, beets to help with some additional vitamin A to support your hormonal swings.

Health Benefits of Dill Pollen

There are so many natural health benefits out there, that one could really research and learn all of their life and never learn about them all. I read about dill pollen on an amazing site - Pollen Ranch. They were the first in the nation to collect and store dill pollen. I recently purchased my first dill pollen, and thought, "WOW! What have I been eating before this!!" We love dill in our house, but nothing compares to real, fresh, pure dill pollen. Seriously! My favorite salad dressing these days is olive oil, coconut vinegar, Himalayan salt, garlic, lemon essential oil, and dill pollen. It's oh so yummy!!  There are so many items you can use dill pollen with, and I find that my allergies are better when I'm using it - and that's something that is priceless to me. I have had such an amazing season between curcumin and the dill pollen that it's been like living a normal life. ;) Who knew? 1.     Digestion: Dill itself is an appetizer and therefore extensively used in culinary. The essential oils present in it are stimulant in nature and activates secretion of bile and digestive juices. These oils also stimulate peristaltic motion of the intestine.
2.     Insomnia: Essential oils found in herbs have a peculiar property. They are simultaneously stimulant and sedative or hypnotic, that is, they stimulate as well as pacify. The essential oils in dill are no different. The Flavonoids and vitamin-B complex present in its essential oils, being stimulant in nature, activates secretion of certain enzymes and hormones which have calmative and hypnotic effects, thereby helping have a good sleep.
3.     Hiccups: Hiccups occur due to various reasons, primarily due to trapping and repeated upward movement of gases through the food pipe and secondarily due to certain allergies, hypersensitivity, hyperactivity and nervous malfunctioning etc. Dill can help in all of these situations. Being a carminative, it helps expulsion of gases and also reduces gas formation and being sedative, it helps calm down hiccups due to allergies (which is actually hypersensitivity of the body towards certain foreign elements and bile), hyperactivity, nervous disturbances etc.
4.     Diarrhea: Diarrhea is caused mainly due to two reasons; indigestion and microbial action. For the first, dill can certainly help as it has very good digestive properties. For the second, it can help again since the Monoterpenes and Flavonoids present in its essential oils are germicidal or bactericidal in nature and can help cure diarrhea by inhibiting microbial infections.
5.     Dysentery: Dysentery is primarily caused due to fungal infections. Here too, dill can help as its essential oils are disinfectant in nature and help inhibit fungal infection effectively.
6.     Menstrual Disorders: The Flavonoids in essential oils of dill are stimulant and Emenagogue in nature, that is, they stimulate secretion of certain hormones which in turn help maintain proper menstrual cycles. Respiratory Disorders: Kaempferol and certain other components of Flavonoids and Monoterpenes in the essential oils of dill are anti congestive and anti histaminic in nature and help clear congestion in the respiratory system due to histamine, allergies or cough.
7.     Oral Care: Dill seeds and leaves are very good mouth fresheners. Apart from that, the essential oils in it are germicidal, anti oxidant and disinfectant in nature. Thus they help end microbial infections in the mouth as well as their anti oxidants minimize the damages caused to gums and teeth by the free radicals.
8.     Cancer: Now it is the turn of the Monoterpenes to come under the lime light. These chemoprotective Monoterpenes, being stimulant in nature, activates secretion of an enzyme called glutathione-S-transferase (the radical glutathione is an effective anti oxidant) which is very effective in neutralizing carcinogens, particularly Cyano- and Benzo- derivatives and free radicals, thereby protecting from cancer. The other anti oxidants in essential oils of dill also contribute to this.
